Providing a constant stream of content in newsletters to your music fans is not very easy. In the past I’ve allowed months to go by without sending emails out to my fans. I knew I that I needed to send something out, but I felt like I just didn’t have anything to say. What do you say to your fans when you’re not releasing content or in between releasing content and you don’t have any cool auditions, interviews, or awards to boast about? Here are some ideas…

  1. Run a contest. Contests are a great way to interact with your fans in a meaningful way. Some contest ideas include, a biggest fan contest where you ask your fans to complete a task and you select the fan that did the best such as a video contest or a photo contest. You can also have them submit a review somewhere, like something, subscribe to something, join or follow something etc.

2. Results from a recent contest

3. Secret meaning behind a song

Musicians, every song has a meaning and your fans want to hear about it. Be liberated to talk about the story behind the song on your blog, on social media, in newsletters, at shows and everywhere else.

12. Launch a new merchandise item. Talk all about it. Why it’s cool, the inspiration for it, and everything else you can think of.

13. Piggyback off of a holiday. Share what you’re doing, how you’re celebrating it, what it means to you, etc.

15. Talk about your charity and why you support it. Create a special campaign and ask your fans to support it with you.

16. Share some stories about interesting experiences you’ve had while doing music. It could be stuff that’s happened while you were touring, or interesting encounters you’ve had with fans, or venues.

17. Share lessons learned. Talk about what you wish you would have known before you started pursuing music.

18. A list of faux pas or do’s and don’ts fans should and should not do or ask you. On the flip side you can share a list of ways they can support you. A lot of people still don’t know how best to support their favorite artists. This is a great opportunity for you to provide a list of ways they can support you.

19. Run a poll or survey asking your fans questions about your music and other fan research you’d like to do.

20. Create your own parody of a popular song and share it with your fans.
