We, independent musicians, are constantly trying to learn more about the music business. We buy books, we read blogs, and we tap into others we know who are doing it too. Another great way to get educated on industry and find inspiration is through podcasts.

Luckily for us, there are a lot of great podcasts out there today made just for independent musicians. They focus on all the different facets of the industry, from the business itself to marketing, the technical side, creation and inspiration, and everything else in between. What’s great about podcasts is that you can put them on while doing something else like driving, cooking, or washing dishes, or while working on another project if it’s not too distracting. 

Here are 12 great music career hacking podcasts we think you should consider adding to your playlist.

1. Creative Juice

Creative Juice is a podcast brought to you by the online musician marketing service Indepreneur and naturally focuses on all things marketing. They get really deep into the topics they cover and do a great job of keeping up with all the trends in this ever-changing digital age.

2. DIY Musician Podcast

The DIY Musician Podcast is brought to you by CD Baby, and just like their blog, it covers a range of topics about the music industry. It’s hosted by Kevin Breuner, the VP of Marketing at CD Baby, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist. 

3. The Six-Minute Music Business Podcast

Want to get some great tips about the music industry, quickly? Then The Six-Minute Music Business Podcast might be for you. It’s hosted by Wade Sutton, founder of Rocket to the Stars Artist Services and co-author of Hacking Music: The Music Business Model Canvas. Just like the title of the show suggests, every episode is only six minutes long a gets right to the point.

4. The Business Side of Music

The Business Side of Music is a weekly podcast that aims to educate and train musicians on how to succeed in the music business. It is hosted by Bob Bender, an established music industry veteran with years of major label experience, who often interviews other industry experts.

5. Female Entrepreneur Musician Podcast

The Female Entrepreneur Musician Podcast is a weekly show geared towards the ladies in the music industry. Hosted by Bree Noble, an accomplished independent artist in her own right, she offers a lot of great tips and advice that anyone with a music career should find useful.

6. Music Marketing Manifesto

The Music Marketing Manifesto is a podcast hosted by John Oszajca, a music vet who helped write the book on online marketing for independent artists after becoming disillusioned with major labels.

7. Techmuze Academy Podcast

This Podcast is brought to you by TechMuze Academy, a site that offers online courses for mixing and music promotion, while their podcast covers a lot of the same topics. 

8. The Modern Musician

This is a new podcast brought to you by The Modern Musician, a site that offers fanbase growth services. The show is hosted by Michael Walker, the founder of The Modern Musician and a fellow musician who has found success using a lot of the techniques he shares.

9. New Music Business

New Music Business is a podcast from Ari Herstand, creator of Ari’s Take and author of the best selling book How to Make it in the New Music Business. In each episode, Ari has a conversation with another artist or expert in the field about current topics in the music industry.

10. When Life Hands You Lennons

When Life Hands You Lennons is a podcast hosted by Lennon Cihak who each episode interviews experts in the music business.

11. Don’t Keep Your Day Job

 Don’t Keep Your Day Job is a podcast where host Cathy Heller has conversations with successful creative entrepreneurs about the hands-on practical steps it takes to make a living doing what you’re passionate about. While the show often goes beyond the music industry, it none the less is still very practical and inspiring.

12. The Third Story

The Third Story is a podcast hosted by Leo Sidran. Like ‘Don’t Keep Your Day Job,’ it features interviews with creative people of all types.
